Gonzalo Garcia's header proved the difference as Real Madrid edged past Juventus with a 1-0 victory at the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday. The win secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The hard-fought victory sets up a quarter-final clash with the winner of the Borussia Dortmund vs. Monterrey match. Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid displayed a mature and disciplined performance, showcasing both resilience and skill in challenging conditions.
The return of Kylian Mbappe was another positive highlight for the Spanish side. The star forward, who had been sidelined due to illness, made his first appearance in the tournament, entering the game as a substitute in the 68th minute to a significant ovation from the Miami crowd of 62,000.
Juventus began the first half with notable energy, led by Igor Tudor. Randal Kolo Muani missed an early chance, chipping the ball over the bar after a through ball from Kenan Yildiz. However, Real Madrid gradually asserted themselves, with Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde forcing Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio into making important saves. Madrid ended the half as the dominant side.
The pressure continued after halftime, and Real Madrid’s breakthrough came through a well-executed play. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an accurate cross from the right wing, which Garcia powerfully headed home for his third goal in four games.
Alonso acknowledged the team's patience and growing dominance after the match. "We had to be patient, we had to mature into the game. This was a knockout tie, so it’s about competing. You grit your teeth, and in the end, we had to hold on. I’m happy with that.”
Juventus showed signs of a comeback, with Francisco Conceicao and Nicolas Gonzalez testing Thibaut Courtois, but their intensity waned as the match progressed. Tudor cited fatigue as a significant factor, stating that many players were requesting substitutions due to the tension, heat, humidity, and the cumulative effects of a long season.
Mbappe’s return offered a promising preview of what's to come in the quarter-finals. Alonso expressed optimism about his star player's condition: “Day by day, he will be better. I talk to him every day about how he's feeling. I think he will be much better for the next game.”
