Shubman Gill's magnificent innings of 269 against England in the recent Birmingham Test was met with praise from all corners. However, his father offered a typically blunt, yet humorous, assessment of his son's performance.
The Indian skipper's impressive knock, featuring 30 boundaries and three sixes, propelled India to a commanding first-innings total of 587. Despite the achievement, Gill revealed his father's cheeky comment about missing out on a triple century.
In a video shared by the BCCI, Gill reacted to voice messages from his parents. His father said, "Well played, I enjoyed watching your batting, and my heart was at peace. You were batting like in your U-16 and U-19 days — I felt very proud." His mother added, “Felt amazing watching you bat, keep going, God bless you.”
However, Gill revealed his father's humorous side, stating, "It means a lot coming from him. But he also told me I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we'll end this match on a great note."
Gill emphasized the importance of his father and his best friend in his cricketing journey. He values their opinions above all others. It is believed his best friend is fellow national teammate, Abhishek Sharma.
"This message means a lot to me. I think, growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad, in the sense that it was because of him that I started playing. And the only person besides him is my best friend, whom I practised with. These are the only two people, when it comes to my cricket, that I care about and that I listen to,” Gill said.
Now, the Indian team aims to capitalize on Gill’s substantial innings to put pressure on England. Having excelled with the bat, Gill's leadership will be crucial as he seeks to steer his team to victory.
