Lando Norris emerged victorious at Silverstone in a thrilling British Grand Prix, capitalizing on a penalty that hampered his teammate Oscar Piastri. The rain-soaked race was also marked by Nico Hulkenberg achieving his first-ever podium finish.
The 2025 British Grand Prix delivered a spectacle of unpredictable racing, featuring five retirements, dynamic weather conditions, and frequent safety car interventions. Notably, it was the first time in over a decade that Lewis Hamilton missed out on a podium finish at his home race.
Oscar Piastri, who initially appeared to be the frontrunner, saw his chances of victory diminish after incurring a 10-second penalty. This penalty was a result of an incident behind the safety car, where he was deemed to have brake-checked, creating a near collision with Max Verstappen. Officials penalized Piastri on lap 21, citing "erratic braking" as the cause.
The penalty significantly impacted Verstappen's race as well. He struggled to maintain control of his Red Bull, spinning off track and dropping to 14th place before recovering to finish 5th.
The race began with stiff competition between Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. Piastri, who had the better car among the two, tried to overtake Verstappen in the very first lap but to no avail.
Early drama unfolded when Liam Lawson and Esteban Ocon collided, leading to the race's first retirement and an early yellow flag.
Frequent safety car periods, both virtual and physical, punctuated the race as numerous cars slid off track due to the slick conditions.
A brief window of racing between laps 4 and 8 saw Piastri successfully overtake Verstappen for the lead. Simultaneously, a fierce battle developed in the midfield involving Kimi Antonelli.
From lap 11 onwards, rain became a dominant factor, benefiting the McLarens, which demonstrated superior performance in the wet.
The fluctuating weather created strategic challenges for race engineers, who had to carefully consider whether to equip their cars with intermediate or slick tires.
On lap 14, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari ran wide and traversed the grass, narrowly avoiding contact with the barrier due to the track's extensive runoff area. The ensuing safety car period allowed Piastri to serve his 10-second penalty.
During this caution period, Russell suggested a red flag, but the FIA opted to keep the race running. The safety car period concluded on lap 17, with Piastri still holding the lead.
The restart on lap 18 brought further incidents, including Russell briefly overtaking Hamilton before losing the position again. Isack Hadjar, driving for Racing Bulls, collided with Antonelli due to poor visibility, forcing Hadjar's retirement. Antonelli also had to retire after sustaining damage to his rear diffuser in the incident.
In the closing stages, Russell, Hamilton, and Verstappen fought their way back into the top 10. Hamilton ultimately finished 4th, Verstappen 5th, and Russell 9th after a late spin.
Following Piastri's penalty, Norris assumed the lead. Hulkenberg passed Stroll to secure his first-ever podium in Formula 1, while Aston Martin managed to get both drivers into the points.
The race ended with McLaren celebrating another strong weekend, while Ferrari and Mercedes struggled with tyre strategy, leaving at least one driver from each team out of the points.
