Fritz Advances to Wimbledon Quarterfinals, Set to Clash with Khachanov
London – Taylor Fritz of the United States has secured his place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals after his opponent, Jordan Thompson, retired due to an injury. The match, held on a show court, saw Fritz displaying his growing expertise on grass.
Thompson, visibly struggling with a right thigh injury, conceded the match after just 10 games, with the score at 6-1, 3-0 in favor of Fritz.
This marks Fritz's third time reaching the quarterfinals at SW19 in the last four years. Prior to Wimbledon, he claimed his fourth Eastbourne title. His journey to the quarterfinals included a five-set victory against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round and another grueling five-setter against Gabriel Diallo in the second round. He then defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets.
Fritz, a five-time Tour-level title winner on grass, ranks second among active male players in grass court titles, trailing only Novak Djokovic. He previously reached the semi-finals of the 2014 Junior Wimbledon.
"I feel like a lot of parts of my game translates well (on grass)," Fritz commented. "I’ve experimented with different things on grass like returning, chipping, slicing, sometimes chipping and coming in on a low ball. I’m trying not to change my game too much, but I’ve made little tweaks that have helped me.”
In the quarterfinals, Fritz is set to face the 17th seed, Karen Khachanov. The match is anticipated to be a showdown between two strong servers, as they have collectively served a total of 121 aces in the tournament thus far.
In other matches, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Briton’s Sonay Kartal 7-6 (3), 6-4, in a match notable for a malfunction in the automated line-calling technology. The malfunction led to a point being replayed, costing Pavlyuchenkova a game in the first set.
