Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has urged the team management to retain Shubman Gill as the captain of the Test team for three years, irrespective of what happens in the ongoing series against England.

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has made a strong case for Shubman Gill to be given a sustained run as captain of the Test team. Shastri believes Gill should lead the side for three years, regardless of immediate results in the ongoing series against England.

Gill's appointment as captain came after Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket. The young batsman marked his debut as skipper with a century, becoming only the fifth Indian captain to achieve this feat. He scored a brilliant 147 in the first innings.

Despite Gill's individual brilliance, India suffered a five-wicket defeat against England, who successfully chased down a target of 371 in the fourth innings. Nevertheless, Shastri remains a firm believer in Gill's leadership potential.

He emphasized Gill's maturity and composure, noting his handling of media interactions and press conferences.

Shastri stated to Wisden, "He’s matured a lot... Let him be there for three years. Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you.”

Shastri further added that Gill possesses the qualities to become one of the greats, but needs time to adapt to varying conditions.

"I’ll be disappointed if Gill doesn’t go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he’s got a regal element of being regal out there when he’s batting. If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that’s the one name I can see,” he said.

Following the defeat, some critics have questioned Gill's tactics. The young captain now faces the challenge of rallying his team for the second Test, scheduled to commence on July 2nd at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

India's historical record at Edgbaston is poor, with seven losses in eight Test matches played at the venue. The Shubman Gill-led side will aim to rewrite history as they seek to level the series in the upcoming match.
