Manchester United Manager Amorim Admits Doubts After Shock Cup Exit; Faces Sacking Speculation

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted he has considered walking away from the club following their shock League Cup defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby Town on Thursday. United were beaten on penalties in the second round, a result that sparked speculation about Amorim’s future after his post-match remarks that “something has to change”. Speaking to reporters on Friday, the 40-year-old Portuguese said frustration had got the better of him in the aftermath of the loss. “Every time in the future we have one defeat like that I'm going to be like that, I'm going to say sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I defend my players and sometimes I think I cannot,” Amorim said, as quoted by AFP. “This is my way of doing things and I'm going to be like that. I felt that in that moment, I was so frustrated, I was so annoyed. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.” Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last November, admitted the Grimsby game left him contemplating his position but insisted he had since shifted focus to Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley. “I felt that after the game. I don't feel that now,” he explained. “Sometimes it's not the result, it's the way we lost that game or draw that game. That is the thing that is hard to accept. Because we can do better.” He added that inconsistency remains his biggest concern. “In this moment, we cover positions, fight for the ball, running, all these small things, sometimes we drop a little bit the level. The good thing is that we now have the next game to put that level up.” United’s poor start, including a defeat to Arsenal, a draw with Fulham and the Grimsby humiliation, has left Amorim under pressure, though he insisted he will not change his candid approach. “I know, again, that you have a lot of experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media, to be more constant, to be more calm. I'm not going to be like that,” he said.
