Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The prodigious left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing, 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, starting on July 2nd.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is close to breaking a 49-year record.
Jaiswal's consistency has been a major positive for India, particularly during this transitional phase in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley underscored his talent, although it wasn't enough to prevent India from succumbing to a five-wicket defeat. Despite setting England a formidable target of 371 runs, India was taken by surprise by the composed chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they look to rebound at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record holder, Sunil Gavaskar, reached 2,000 Test runs in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first-ever cricketer to surpass 10,000 Test runs. Following him on the list are Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who achieved the milestone in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to join and even surpass these legends, providing India with a much-needed lift in a crucial must-win Test.
