What’s the world’s biggest company?

Wrong, it’s Bosideng International, a Shanghai-based maker of winter jackets and active wear. That’s according to Bloomberg data, by which it surged on Thursday to the top of the global list with a market cap equivalent to . . . more than 6,000 trillion US dollars.

Yes, OK, it’s obviously a data bork.

Further investigation shows that between Wednesday’s Hong Kong close and Thursday’s open, Bosideng’s market cap in the Bloomberg database went from HK$46.38bn (slightly under $6bn) to HK$46,724.99tn. A decimal point appears to have moved quite far to the right.

Here’s the market cap graph:

When we pressed publish on this story on Friday morning, Bloomberg was still showing Bosideng’s market cap to be about 45 times the total estimated value of the global broad money supply. But since Alphaville posts are piped directly on to the Terminal, we imagine the mistake will be fixed shortly.

Still. Lol.
